Of Councils and Frogs

We received a call yesterday informing us the I am now the new President Elect of the Umpqua Basin Watershed Council (Partnership for the Umpqua Rivers. This comes as a real surprise and an unexpected honor. I will spend the next year in this position and then play the role of President for three years.

All of this is very contrary to the way I have lived my life since the days of the war. For a season I was a young preacher but then soon went into hiding in the high mountain wilds for many years. My interactions with the world at large were minimal and focused.

Now since the salmon have shown up here at Singing Falls the interchanges with the general public have increased many fold. I have yet to adjust to it and pray that my idealism survives the onslaught.

Today I am taking a course for certification to identify and handle the rapidly disappearing Yellow Legged Frog. This because I am doing the stream and fish barrier survey. Much time spent in a broad segment of the watershed will up my chances for seeing them while working. In fact I've seen a couple already. One was located at Singing Falls and was his image was featured here on the blog for a while.
